Washington State Legislative Priorities (SR 23-016; N. Thomsen)

Division:
Office of the Director / Nicole Thomsen, Public Affairs & Policy Manager
Prior Board Review:
None

Background

The 2024 Washington State Legislative session will begin a short session in January 2024. In preparation for the legislative session, the board has an opportunity to approve a legislative agenda in alignment with public health values and priorities. Unlike in years past, as a County department, Department priorities will be considered for placement in County priorities.

Three department priorities have been identified for further County consideration: (1) Strengthened Foundational Public Health Services funding, (2) intergovernmental data sharing, and (3) emergency medical service providers to support public health efforts. Department staff are scheduled to meet with Executive Office staff this week to further explore listed priorities.

Recognizing that 2024 is a short legislative session and the role of the Board of Health in state policy has not been fully discussed, it is the Department’s recommendation to hold on further action until the 2025 Washington legislative session.
