February 12, 2019
Action

Authorize the Administrator to approve recruitment of an Epidemiologist II to fill a budgeted yet vacant position (SR 19-007; S. Frederick)

Division:
Administration / Shawn Frederick, Administrative Services Director
Prior Board Review:
None

Background

Per Board of Health instruction, any recruitment for vacant staff positions must be approved by the Board during the 2019 Budget year.

Under the guidance of the Health Officer, the Assessment program collects, analyzes, and distributes data about health and disease trends and issues in Snohomish County. In addition to health and disease trends in the county, the program has an active and increasing role during response to communicable disease and foodborne illness outbreaks in the county. Working collaboratively with community partners, the program completes comprehensive reports like the Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan.

In addition to routine daily activities, the program provides fee-based epidemiological services to community partners in the region. Examples of this include recent projects with Verdant and San Juan Health Department.

The program is currently staffed by a 0.8 FTE CD Epidemiologist II and a 1.0 FTE Epidemiologist I. There is a vacant Epidemiologist II position (Exhibit A) created when the previous Epidemiologist departed in November 2018. The position was left vacant pending the approval of the 2019 Budget.

Board Authority

Consistent with the Division of Responsibilities, the Board of Health has authority over the Health District budget.

Recommended Motion

MOVE TO authorize the Administrator to approve recruitment of a 1.0 FTE Epidemiologist II to fill a budgeted yet vacant position.
