Prior Board Review:
Executive Committee, 10/23/19

Background

In 2009 the Public Health Advisory Council (PHAC) was established by Resolution 09-20 of the Board of Health. The purpose of the PHAC is to convene community partners to provide periodic advice to the Health District and to the Board of Health and to make recommendations relevant to improving the health of the citizens of Snohomish County. Members are appointed to the Council for staggered three-year terms and serve without compensation. Members are appointed by the Chair of the Board and confirmed by the full Board of Health. In 2016, Board of Health approved recommendations in Staff Report #16-033 expanding PHAC representation to include a philanthropy/funders sector. The position was held by Robin Fenn, Verdant Health Commission Superintendent, from January 2017 to March 2017. Since then the sector has remained unfilled.

Karri Matau has been a member of Community Foundation of Snohomish County for a combined 15 years and its CEO since December 2018. The foundation seeks to be a catalyst for change in Snohomish County by promoting charitable giving and striving to create community impact through grantmaking. Grants support a variety of interests including homeless shelters, local arts organizations, health and human services groups, and other nonprofits.

Chair Stephanie Wright has appointed Karri Matau to fill the unexpired term from November 2019 through June 2021 and requests Board of Health confirmation.

Board Authority

Consistent with Resolutions 09-20 and 12-16, and approved recommendations in Staff Report #16-033, the Board of Health has authority to confirm PHAC membership.
